Chapter 26.C

The children of William the Decoratorer
1852 to 19?

William the Decorator, born 1819, son of William the cheesemonger, had four children with his wife Frances.

Henry 1852-

We have no record of his birth or baptism. He first appears age 9 in the 1861 census. At the 1871 census he is still with his parents, working as a painter - his father's trade.

In 1871 he enlists in the Royal Artillery. This appears in National Archives reference WO 69/79/8189 "Description of Recruits Enlisted for the Royal Artillery" but this is not a digitised record. The entry appears on page 170; this number is imprinted at the top outer corner page. His Soldier's Number was 33371: It identifes him as 'Henry BRUSH. Born Chelsea, Middlesex. Enlisted 1871 aged 19 years'.

The illustration comes from britishempire.co.uk and is said to be an extract from "P W Reynolds notebook" of the uniform at 1861.(alternative illustration ra1863.jpg) I believe it remained the same or similar at 1871. The fur busby was worn betwen 1855 and 1878 in the Royal Artillery. The small pouch on the front of the cartouche belt contained percussion caps. Henry would not, as a new recruit, have had the medals shown nor the two good conduct stripes on his right forearm.

I cannot see him in the 1881 census. Abroad with the Army?

His military career did not last. By 1891 he was back with the family - working as a painter and living with his mother in the same house as sister Charlotte and his brother in law Gerald Whiting in Chelsea. The Ancestry census transcription wrongly shows his name as Henry BENCH.

Not apparent in 1901 or 1911 censuses and no clearly matching death. There is nothing to suggest he had any children.

Frances Sarah 1855/6 - 1

Frances Sarah is born in 1855/6 though no record has been found of her birth or baptism. In 1861 she is listed as 5 , in 71 as 15, though at her marriage in December 1880 she is 23 - which would put her birth as 1857. A case of understating her age to avoid appearing older than her husband?

In 1880, on Christmas day, Frances Sarah marries Henry Clarke Groves a mechanic age 23 at St John's church in Chelsea. The Ancestry transcription says his middle name is but I cannot make that out. It is however borne out by later censuses. Their, joint, address is given as 422 Kings Road. Her father William is described as a decorator.

At 1901 Frances, Harry and three chidren are in Chelsea. He is a scietntific instrument maker. His place of birth is given as Stockholm in Sweden but he is noted as a British subject.

There are several trees in Ancestry with particulars of Henry Grove, the best researched publicly available one seems to be the Parry family Tree.

Charlotte Elizabeth 1858-19

Charlotte Elizabeth is registered in Q3 1858 in Lambeth R.D.. She appears age 2 in the 1861 census but does not appear in 1871.

Charlotte Elizabeth marries in 1880 to Gerald Whiting.

In 1881 in Lambeth and in 1891 & 1901 they are living in Chelsea with three children. Her mother Frances and brother Henry are in the same house in 1891. In 1911 in Fulham.

Caroline 1857/8 -

There is no birth or baptism record for Caroline. She does not appear in the 1861 census but is listed in the 1871 census as age 13 - which gives a birth date of 1857/8. Her birthplace is given as Brixton in 1871 (by her father) and as Chelsea in 1881 (by her or her employer). Since the family had moved back to Chelsea while she was a child (between 1861 and 1871)this may be understandable.

At the 1881 census, age 22 , she is a dressmaker lodging with the Jackson family house o14 College Place Chelsea. I think the status is given as 'UnM' but it is not clear.

I can find no further entry for Caroline after this time.

Are Charlotte and Caroline the same person?

It is very tempting to think so. Their ages are very close. Caroline is not listed in 1861 (or at any time after 1881). Charlotte is not listed in 1871. The sticking point is that there are 1881 census entries for both Caroline and Charlotte.

William John 1865/6-

William John is born in 1865/6 as he appears in the 1871 census which shows the family back in Chelsea at ?Brittania? Terrace. The William J registered in Q1 1866 at Kensington RD probably.

At 1881 with his parents aged 15, printers compositor.
