Previous Chapter 24.B : Isaac of Leavesden
Thomas had four wives and six children - all boys by the first three.
The eldest son of Thomas and his first wife, Sarah Taylor, Samuel 'the postman' was my xG-grandfather. He is considered in chapter 29.A .
William was born on 17 July 1812 and baptised on 1 November 1812 at St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey.
On 5 August 1837 at St Mary's Lambeth, Surrey he married his cousin Margaret, the daughter of William 'the cheesemonger' - Thomas's brother. The witness was Samuel Brush. Possibly Samuel of Harrow, also an uncle, or William's older (half) brother Samuel 'the postman'. William is recorded as a shopman of Westminster Road and Margaret as a servant of 38 South Street. I hold a copy of the marriage certificate.
RE suggests that at the 1841 census they were at High Street, Camberwell but I have no been able to locate this.(There is a Margaret Brush in Lambeth but her husband is named as John.) Per FWB, he was a fishmonger at High Street Peckham in 1845 and then moved to Chelsea [. ...more?...] At 1851 they were at Hortulan Place in Chelsea where he is listed as a fishmonger. A visitor was staying with them, a Joseph Palmer age 21 also a fishmonger. At 1861 and 1871 they are at 339 Kings Road, Chelsea. He is still a fishmonger. His age is given as 48 and 58, hers as 42 and 53 - which is much less than expected, though her birthplace is (correctly) identified as Pinner. At 1871 a servant, errand boy, was living with them.
There is no record of them having had any children.
William died in Q4 1872 in the Chelsea RD. Margaret appears to have died in Q4 1879 and was buried at Battersea on 6 December age 66.
George was baptised on 18 September 1814 in Southwark. His story is contained in its own chapter 25.E .
Henry was born on 2 February 1817. Whether this was in Southwark or whether the family had by then moved to Chelsea is unknown. They were certainly in Chelsea by 1818. FWB confidently asserts that he was born at Strewan Place Chelsea but I'm unclear where he got his from. If they had moved to Chelsea the address is almost certainly correct. He was the son of Amey but was not baptised until 1821, after her death. His baptism on 3 June was at the same time as his younger half-brother Isaac James.
Henry marries on 13 April 1840 to Hannah Robinson at the church of St George in the East . He is identifed as a mariner and his father as Thomas, a fishmonger. His marriage is witnessed by William Brush and Margaret Brush (presumably his brother and sister in law) . His address is 10 New Gravel Lane, which (like the church and her address 7 Johnson Street) is in the Wapping and Shadwell area of east London - dockland. She was a servant, the daughter of William Robinson "gentleman's servant". In 1841 Henry and Hannah have a child Charles Wesley (birth cert). At that time living at Peel Street in Kensington. (Church register says diffferent ). I cannot locate them in the 1841 census.
Isaac is the first child of Thomas with his third wife Sarah (nee Martin). His story is continued in Chapter 28.A .
Alfred Martin was baptised on 4 August 1822 at Chelsea but was buried there later that year on 6 December.
