Section 08 : Hereford

Chapter 08.E: Kemerton

This section is built on an extended and friendly correspondence from 1993 to 2003 betwen my father Fred (FWB) and the late Rebecca Anne McDaniels of Ohio, complete with Christmas cards.  She was the daughter of Charles William Brush [H104], below.  Genealogy was very different.  There was lots of hand or type written correspondence beween enthusiasts, who contacted one another through registers of interests maintained by societies.  Much time was sent looking at microfilms and printed transcripts or visiting record offices.  A very different world.  This chapter is therefore very different in style and content to many others.  FWB also had contact with Anne's cousin Ruth.

William James BRUSH [H100] is the starting point.  He was born on 16 September 1861 (from 1939 register) and baptised on 11 November 1861, the son of Richard Brush and Sarah (SEALE), at Lugwardine just outside Hereford. They and their ancestors are considered in Chapter 08.C .  William had at least six siblings, shown in the 1871 and 1881 censuses - not yet detailed in this BFBI.  They will be in chapter 08.D in due course

He married first to Clara LOYNES [H100a] at the Hereford Register office on 3 January 1887.  He was a gardener age 24 resident at Lugwardine, she was from Weston Beggard age 22, the daughter of John LOYNES, a shoemaker.  The marriage did not last long.  Clara Brush, age 23 was buried on 31 December 1887 and their daughter Emily Ellen [H109] was baptised the same day.  Their address is given on the certificate as Albion Terrace, Cilfynydd, Llanfabon in South Wales.  At the 1891 census he is a Groom, domestic servant, in the household of Arthur Long Price a 25 year old undergraduate at the Rectory in Little Marcle, back in Herefordshire - just to the west of Ledbury.  Emily is in nearby Weston Beggard, living with her Loynes grandmother and an aunt.

On 22 November 1892 William married a second time to Rebecca PROBERT [H100b] at Whittington (Withington?) in Herefordshire - in the Hereford RD.  He was a gardener and the certificate identifies him as a widower.  Rebecca had been born in Llangenny parish, Crickhowell in Wales in 1862, the daughter of William and Emma Probert.  Between 1894 and 1905 they had eight children, first in Stretton Grandison and later at Kemerton.  Unsure in some cases if 'b' date is birth or bapt.  Stretton Grandison is in the established Brush Hereford area, Kemerton is a village about five miles NE of Tewkesbury.  Going back to Brush roots.  At the marriage of Charles in 1921 Wiliam is identifed as a Gardener, domestic.

Rebecca died at Kemerton on 22 February 1932. (Though Kemerton is in Worcestershire it was in the Tewksbury Gloucs RD.)  William James then went to live with daughter Hilda who took care of him after Rebecca died and after her death in 1936 with Lilian Joyce - this was recalled by his grandaughter Ruth.  At 1939 they were at 75 Hewlett Road in Cheltenham.  William James died in the Cirencester RD on 4 February 1942.

The children of William James:

Emily [H101] Emily is the child of William and Clara, baptised at Llanafon on 31 December 1887, the same day as mother Clara is buried.  FWB and RAMcD never got to this conclusion.  In 1891 Emily is in Weston Beggard living with her grandmother and an aunt.  She appears in the 1901 census with William and Rebecca.  At 1911 she, and sister Joyce, are in London as servants in the house of Dr Robert Capes.

At some point between then and 1916 she married Arthur COLMER but for a long time it was not possible to find the place and date.  The 1916 and 1921 Canadian censuses show her as having arrived in Canada in 1912 but the date for Arthur is given as 1909 in one and 1911 in another.  This conflict is resolved by an incoming passenger record for Arthur, single, age 22 in 1909, final destiation Winnipeg. Which indicated that the marriage was in Canada, not (as suggested by RAMcD) in 1914 in England.  The marriage of Arthur Colmer and Emily Ellen Brush is recorded in the Manitoba records on 1.7.1912 - 11 July or 7 November? - but it is indexed as Arthur COHNER and Emily Ellen BORUSH, which made it a little tricky to find.. The remaining question is did they meet in London and she followed him out or did she emigrate for another reason and meet him there? I guess we'll never know.
In 1929 Emily and son James made a trip back to the UK.
They both died in Winnipeg, Canada where Anne says they had lived most of their life.

Arthur James [H102] b at Stretton Grandison on 4 January 1894.  In a correspondence with a Mrs J Jackson in 1990, referring to the Herefordshire family, she wrote "my mother's...brother was sent to Canada as a small child and was killed during the first world war and is buried somewhere in France". This may be a reference to Arthur James, though he was still at home with his parents age 17 at the 1911 census.  His occupation then was given as Groom (Domestic).  His sister Emily (to whom he was presumably sent) did not go to Canada until 1912.  Did he perhaps accompany his elder sister when she travelled out?  RAMcD also says Arthur died in France during WW1 on 26 October 1917.  There is mention of an army photo received from the Gloucestershire Regt research group but it was not with the notes. "Lance Corporal Arthur James BRUSH (232481) enlisted into the 2nd Battalion London Regt (Royal Fusiliers) in Marylebone London.  He was killed in action on Oct 26, 1917 and is buried in ??Cement?? House Cemetery, Langemark Plot VII Row E Grave 36."  Langemark is a few miles north of Ypres which is actually in the West of Belgium rather than in France.  He is named on the war memorial monument in Kemerton.  After getting one of Anne's letters FWB and my mum trotted off to Kemerton to look.  FWB says it was badly weathered in 1993 and regiment nor readable (there is a photo somewhere).

Lilian Joyce [H103] b at Stretton Grandison on 23 June 1895.
Married Albert Edmund LANE (not HARE as suggested) who lived in nearby Conderton (Banns register) in Dec 1921 (banns 4,11 & 18 Dec).  They had two daughters, Ruth and Joan - living in Cheltenham in 1993.  She died June 1954.  Ruth married John PROUT and lived at 1 St Albans Close in Cheltenham.  Ruth continued to live in Cheltenham and died 24/12/1998 from brain cancer. FWB (who lived near to Cheltenham) had some contact with her but her interest in the family seems to have been less thn her cousin Anne had.

Albert Victor [H104] born at Stretton Grandison on 12 June 1897 (bapt 25 July 1897 ?). In the 1911 census, age 13, he is listed as a Plough boy. In the 1925 Electoral register he is shown as living at Kemerton.  In the 1927 & 1928 Electoral registers he is shown as living at "Council Houses, Twyning".  Also in Twyning in the same register are Benjamin Brush at and Mary Brush at Council Houses. Who are they?
He married Kathleen ELLIS, known as Kitty, in Q2 1927 in Tewkesbury RD. Banns were called on 27 March and 3 & 10 April. He was known as Bert .  FWB also had contact in 1993 with Mrs Margaret E Probert who reported a conversation with the butcher in Kemerton who said he "could remember a Bert Brush living in the village many years ago. Bert had a daughter Hilda and she looked after him. For some reason they left the village" This may be mixing Bert his father and sister up?  While visiting Kemerton in 1993 FWB met a man in the churchyard "who told us that 'Bert Brush' used to live in a cottage called 'Charmaine' [and] ...that they later moved to Cheltenham".  RAMcD said Bert and Kitty moved first to Bredon and then to Cheltenham.  In 1974 they were at the almshouses in Tennyson Road, Cheltenham.  Albert died or was buried 1.11.1984 . Kitty died in period 1992-1994, in a home. moved

Charles William [H105] born at Kemerton on 11 March 1899.  This seems a firm birth date given by his daughter. In the 1911 census, age 12, he is listed as being a school and as being a grocer's errand boy.
He married Edith SMITH nee BOWKETT on 28 July 1921 at the Tewkesbury Register Office.  He was described as a painter, a bachelor, age 22.  She as a widow age 33 with no occupation.  Her father is identifed as Edward BOWKETT farm labourer, deceased.  They had one son by this marriage - Ronald Charles on 28 January 1922 (from death index Q4 1997) at Kempsey (about 10 miles north of Kemerton).  Edith Smith is believed to have died as Edith Brush in 1964 age 76 (ie dob 1887/8 which tallies with the age at marriage) and left everything to daughter Dorothy Mary Glass - Dorothy M Smith birth registered Q2 1913, married as Mary D Smith to James Glass in 1939.  Which should indicate that Charles and Edith divorced at some point.

Rebecca Anne BRUSH(who later married McDaniel and had children and grandchildren, was a -the only?- daughter of Charles William), who was unaware of the first marriage, wrote "After serving in the Army in WW1 - and being severely wounded spending about a year in hospital - he emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada where he lived with his sister Emily Brush Colmer and her family for 'several years'.  He later went to the USA and stayed there until he died".  He married a second time to Emma JOHNSON, who was b 22 March 1903 in Nelsonville, Perry County OH on 9 July 1930. The marriage licence does however include a declaration that Charles had not previously been married. Rebecca Anne BRUSH, who later married McDaniel and had children and grandchildren, was a (the only?) daughter of Charles William.

Charles William died 3 August 1977 at Crooksville OH, Emma died 23 August 1984 at Logan OH.

Ernest George [H106] born at Kemerton on 10 April 1900. There is an RAF service record with a 'service date'of 16 April 1918 confirming the birth date. Sevice number 142,646
Married Violet Mercia WALBY on 30 July 1930 in Bromyard RD. (RAMcD thought it was SPENCER but Walby appears in the Kemerton Banns register and theGRO marriage index.)  He is of Kemerton, she of Felton.  Banns called 29 June and 6& 13 July - overlapping with those of brother Percy.  They had two children.
She died on 10 October 1958 at Hereford, he died in 1967.  Violet died 10 October 1958 in Hereford Hosital age 57, Ernest in Q4 1967 in Weston super mare RD. He was a bus conductor.

Daphne E born 1931 Bromyard RD.
Married Gordon E. HALLIDAY in 1960 Hereford RD.

Max E born 1931 Bromyard RD (??Q£ 1935 Ledbury, Hereford and Worceser RD??
Married three times. (1) Audrey J FISHER Q1 1961 Hereford RD.  Apparently ended in divorce as Audrey J BRUSH marries William H BECKETT 1970 Oxford RD.  (2)Heather Ellen HARRISON Q$ 1971 Hereford RD.  She dies 1972 Hereford RD age 30.  (3) Joyce E BRACE Q3 1973 Hereford RD.

Percy Edward [H107] was born 30 April 1902 (from the 1939 regster) and baptised at Kemerton on (30/4) 26 June 1902.
Married Edith Rose DURACK who was born 16 August 1902 (39 reg) The banns were called on 13, 20 & 27 July 1930. He is of Kemerton, her address is given as St Michels Harlesden London That register shows him as a grocery shop manager and her as an aircraft instrument maker.
He lived in various addresses in North London (from Electoral rolls) ending up in Wembley. RAMcD reported that he came to visit them in the US several times. He died 23 November 1982, the probate record gives his address as 36 Georgian Court, Wembley. He left a will with the estate valued at £32,000. Edith died on 21 October 1994 - a date received direct at the time from niece Ruth.

Hilda Margaret May [H108]aka Daisy? b at Kemerton on 20 August 1905.
She died 30 May 1936 at Worcester(shire?)- Worcester RD.

A reference in 1999 to AMcD cousin Also to her g-grandmothers line of Bobo (beaubeau in French from when they came to US in 1700s. Also to grandmother Probert's parents having come from Radnorshire.
