Chapter 03.F

Spreading out from Ripple

This text is derived from FWB(1) notes "The Brushes of Tewkesbury" beginning at "The Ninth Generation". I may be contacted concerning Brush families in the UK at brushdw@gmail.com

In section 13.E we considered Benjamin BRUSH [T114], his children and grandchildren.  Although he was born in Tewkesbury the next two generations were almost all based in Ripple in Worcestershire.  The third generation - Benjamin's great grandchildren - began to spread further afield.

The children of Thomas [T135] and Sarah (Smith)

Elizabeth Harriet Laura [T144]Elizabeth was baptised twice.  First at Kempsey in Worcestershire on 5 February 1849 as Elizabeth Harriet and a second time at Bidford on Avon, Warwickshire on 24 June 1849 as Elizabeth Harriet Laura.  Bidford is some 20 miles north-east, between Evesham and Sratford on Avon.  Kempsey is 7 miles north of Ripple on the way to Worcester. At the 1851 census, age 2 she was living with her parents at Brockeridge, Twyning.

George [T145] was born in the Tewkesbury RD in 1851 and baptised at Bidford, as Frederick George on 10 October 1852.  At the 1881 census, age 29, he was living with his parents at 164 Oak Road, West Bromwich, Warwickshire.  His occupation given as 'Engineer'.  He married in the Kings Norton RD in 1888 and died in 1902 in the Stourbridge RD.  There is no record of any children.

Amelia Ann [T146] was born 1853 in the Tewkesbury RD and baptised on 3 June 1855 at Bidford.

Charles Thomas [T147] was born on 13 June 1856 at Twyning in Gloucestershire which is just across the county boundary - probably adjoining parishes. His parents had appeared in the 1851 census at Brockeridge in Twyning.  He married Sarah Ann HOLDEN in 1878 in the Dudley RD.  They had eight children - see below.  He was a brickworks manager (source = census?)  He died on 28 January 1913 in the Stourbridge RD.

Reece William [T149] was born in 1860 in Tewkesbury RD. The 1881 census shows him simply as William, age 20, an engineer.  He married Mary ?? and they had five children.

Clara Alice [T150] The 1881 census shows her age as 17 and her birthplace as West Bromwich, with no occupation.  She was baptised 12 July 1863 at Ripple and died 1887 in the Pontypridd RD across the border in Wales.

Agnes [T148](2) The 1881 census shows her age 14, born at Twyning with no occupation but her birth was registered in 1867 at west Bromwich RD. Died 1893 at west Bromwich.

The children of Benjamin [T137] and Eliza (Tounley)

William Harry (or Harvey?) [T150X](3) was born at Tewkesbury in 1857/8 according to the 1861 census. His birth is registered as William TOWNLEY in Q3 1857. He was baptised at Ripple on 8 November 1857 by Eliza Tounley, a servant. Whether Benjamin was the father is unknown. There is a marriage of William Harvey Townley to Emily Jane Hancox on 23 June 1879 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire with his father named as Benjamin Townley. At the 1881 census William, a shoemaker, wife Emma and daughter Bertha are living at Bishopsgate St 6 Back 83, Birmingham. At Aston in 1891 census with a second wife? There is a death of a William H Townley in Birmingam RD in Q3 1928.

Elizabeth Ann [T151] was baptised on 19 June 1859 at Ripple.  She had one child.

James [T152] was baptised on 15 December 1861 at Ripple and buried there on 14 September 1862.

Eliza [T153] baptised 12 February 1865 at Ripple.  Married Henry Thomas BIRT 2 march 1886 at Ripple.

Bertha [T154] baptised 24 November 1867 at Ripple.  At some time Bertha lived at 72 Church Street in Tewkesbury. Norah Day(4) says number 71 and suggests it may have been the house bequeated by Philip Brush senior to his son in 1669.   Hmm ..... She died in 1957 at Holm Hospital at Tewkesbury and was buried at Ripple on 8 July.

Alice [T155] baptised 11 June 1871 at Ripple.  She married George SPENCER in 1904 in the Upton-on-Severn RD.
